  • Human Growth and Development
  • Sports Science
  • Sports and Exercise Physiology
  • Kinesiology
  • Physical Fitness and Education
  • Sports Medicine
  • Population studies and community Health
  • Body Composition
  • Sports performance and Nutrition.

International Journal of Kinanthropometry publishes following types of manuscripts

  • Research Articles
  • Review Articles
  • Narrative Review Articles
  • Case Studies

Document Templates

The use of the templates is mandatory. The three submission files (title page, anonymised manuscript and typeset manuscript) must be prepared with the journal templates, available in English and Spanish (see Templates and documents at the top of this section). The templates allow figures and tables to be placed close to where they are cited and facilitate peer review and final typesetting.

Article types

  • (i) Research Article: Articles must be fully documented and interpreted with significant findings of original research. There is no word limit for Research article, but abstracts should be limited to 300 words, with 3 to 5 keywords.
  • (ii) Review Article: Critical and comprehensive reviews that provide new insights or interpretation of a subject through thorough and systematic evaluation of available evidence will be accepted for publication. Reviews should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including the abstract but excluding references, tables and figures) and should include a meta-analysis.
  • (iii) Narrative Review Article: These are short, timely articles that summarise recent developments in a field without providing an exhaustive review of all the literature. IJK encourages Narrative Reviews that propose provocative new ideas and challenge currently accepted opinions. Narrative Reviews should be between 3000 and 5000 words. Section headings should be short and informative.
  • (iv) Case study: brief, well-documented description of an individual case (e.g. an athlete, a patient or a small group) with significant kinanthropometric findings and their interpretation. Maximum length of 2,000 words (excluding abstract, references, tables and figures), abstract of up to 250 words, 3 to 5 keywords, and a maximum of 3 tables or figures and 20 references. It follows the CARE guideline and requires the written informed consent of the participant (or of their parents or legal guardians in the case of minors).

Author Guidelines

Submission of manuscript by the author implies that the content of the manuscript has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere except as a brief abstract in any scientific symposium or conference or meeting. Manuscripts should be submitted online in Word form and written in accordance with author guidelines.

Only manuscripts of sufficient quality that meet the aims and scope of the International Journal of Kinanthropometry will be reviewed.

There is no fee payable to submit or publish in this journal.

Manuscripts must be prepared using the journal templates.

Double-blind peer review: IJK uses a double-blind peer-review process. The submission therefore consists of three separate files: (1) a title page including the title, the authors’ full names, affiliations, contact details of the corresponding author and the declarations (including acknowledgements and funding); (2) an anonymised manuscript from which any information that could identify the authors has been removed, including names, affiliations, acknowledgements, funding details, self-citations that reveal the authors’ identity and personal information in the file properties; and (3) the typeset manuscript prepared with the journal template. Only the anonymised manuscript is sent to the reviewers.

Article structure

Papers must follow internationally accepted rules and conventions, including the International System of Units (SI). The journal templates already include the required format (Arial font, heading and text styles, tables and references): type over the placeholder text keeping the predefined styles, and delete the grey guidance text before submitting.

1. Title page

  • Article type.
  • Title: concise and informative, no more than 20 words, and its translation into the other language (Spanish or English).
  • Running title: no more than 50 characters, including spaces.
  • Authors: full given name(s) and family name(s) of each author, without abbreviations, with their ORCID iD (mandatory for the corresponding author and recommended for all authors).
  • Affiliations: department, faculty, university or institution (without abbreviations), city and country.
  • Corresponding author: name and email address.
  • Counts: words in the main text and the abstract, and number of tables, figures and references.
  • Reporting guideline followed (STROBE, CONSORT, TREND, PRISMA 2020, CARE or other), available from the EQUATOR Network.
  • Declarations, in this order: author contributions (CRediT taxonomy), funding, conflicts of interest, ethics approval (committee, code and date), informed consent, data availability, use of artificial intelligence and acknowledgements. They will be published at the end of the article.

2. Anonymised manuscript

It contains the full article, with continuous line numbering and without any information that could identify the authors:

  • Title and translated title.
  • Abstract in English and Spanish: structured (Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusions), no more than 300 words (250 for Case Studies) and without citations, tables or figures. Narrative Reviews may use an unstructured abstract. If you cannot provide the version in the other language, the editorial team will help with the translation.
  • Keywords: 3 to 5, in alphabetical order and separated by semicolons, preferably MeSH terms.
  • Main text:
    • Introduction: background supported by up-to-date literature, justification of the research problem and aims or hypotheses in the last paragraph.
    • Materials and Methods, with the subsections: Study Design (type of study, setting and period, reporting guideline, ethics approval —given in the manuscript as “[Ethics committee blinded for review]”— and compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki); Participants (population, recruitment, inclusion and exclusion criteria, sample size calculation and informed consent); Procedures (standardised conditions and order of the tests); Anthropometric Measurements (ISAK protocol, instruments and their precision, ISAK accreditation level of the anthropometrists, number of measurements and intra- and inter-evaluator technical error of measurement); Derived Variables (body composition equations, somatotype, proportionality or indices); Other Variables, if any; and Statistical Analysis (normality tests, tests used, effect sizes, 95% confidence intervals, software and significance level).
    • Results: in the same order as the aims, without interpretation and without repeating in the text all the data shown in tables and figures.
    • Discussion: interpretation of the results in the light of previous literature, strengths, limitations and practical applications.
    • Conclusions: brief, supported by the data and answering the aims.
    • References.

Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses follow the PRISMA 2020 guideline: protocol and registration (e.g. in PROSPERO), eligibility criteria, information sources and search strategy, study selection, data collection, risk of bias assessment, synthesis methods and meta-analysis, and certainty of evidence (e.g. GRADE). Case Studies follow the CARE guideline and are structured as: Introduction, Case Presentation, Assessment, Intervention (if applicable), Follow-up and Outcomes, Discussion and Conclusions. In Narrative Reviews, Materials and Methods may be replaced by thematic sections, briefly stating how the literature was searched and selected.

3. Typeset manuscript

The full article (title page information and manuscript text) prepared with the typeset manuscript template, which reproduces the journal’s publication layout. The DOI, dates, volume and pages are completed by the editorial team.

Anthropometric terminology and citation of the ISAK Manual

  • Terminology: the names of the anatomical landmarks and of the anthropometric measurements (basic measurements, skinfolds, girths, lengths and breadths) must follow the terminology of the ISAK Manual (International Standards for Anthropometric Assessment / Protocolo internacional para la valoración antropométrica), e.g. “stretch stature”, “triceps skinfold” or “arm relaxed girth”. Use the same names in the text, tables and figures.
  • Citation of the ISAK Manual: cite the edition of the manual actually used, with its authors, year and edition, and state the edition in the reference as well. If a translation was used, cite the version in that language. For example, for the 2019 edition:
    Esparza-Ros, F., Vaquero-Cristóbal, R., & Marfell-Jones, M. (2019). International standards for anthropometric assessment (2019 ed.). International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry.
Esparza-Ros, F., Vaquero-Cristóbal, R. y Marfell-Jones, M. (2019). Protocolo internacional para la valoración antropométrica (ed. 2019). International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry.

Tables and figures

  • Tables: editable (not images), numbered in order of citation and placed close to where they are first cited, with the caption above and notes below (abbreviations and statistical tests), with three horizontal lines and no vertical lines. Their data must not duplicate results described in the text.
  • Figures: numbered in order of citation and placed close to where they are first cited, with a caption below that can be understood without reading the main text and brief alternative text for screen-reader users. Minimum resolution of 300 dpi, colours distinguishable in greyscale, and scale bars instead of magnification factors. Optionally, they may also be uploaded as supplementary files (TIFF, EPS, PNG or JPG).

References

IJK follows APA style (7th edition).

In-text citations: author–date format. With one or two authors, always cite both, e.g. Surname and Surname (Year) or (Surname & Surname, Year). With three or more authors, cite the first author followed by et al. from the first citation, e.g. Surname et al. (Year) or (Surname et al., Year). Several references within the same parentheses are ordered alphabetically and separated by semicolons, e.g. (Surname, Year; Surname et al., Year).

Reference list: at the end of the article, in alphabetical order by the surname of the first author, with hanging indent. Every in-text citation must appear in the list and vice versa. Include the DOI as a link (https://doi.org/…) whenever available and carefully check surnames, titles, year and pagination, as the DOI is used to link each reference to its source.

Declaration of interest

All authors are requested to disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest including any financial, personal or other relationships with other people or organizations within three years of beginning the submitted work that could inappropriately influence, or be perceived to influence, their work.

Changes to authorship

Before submitting the manuscript, all authors are expected to check carefully the list and order of authors before submitting their manuscript and provide the definitive list of authors at the time of the final submission. Addition, deletion or rearrangement of author names in the authorship list should be made only before the manuscript has been accepted and changes can be done only after approval by the journal Editor. For such requests, the following details are to be submitted to the editor by the corresponding author : (a) the reason for the change in author list and (b) written confirmation (e-mail, letter) from all authors that they agree with the addition, removal or rearrangement. In the case of addition or removal of authors, this includes confirmation from the author being added or removed. Only in exceptional circumstances will the Editor consider the addition, deletion or rearrangement of authors after the manuscript has been accepted. While the Editor considers the request, publication of the manuscript will be suspended. If the manuscript has already been published in an online issue, any requests approved by the Editor will result in a corrigendum.

Contact Details for manuscript submission

Articles must be submitted through the journal’s online submission system. If you have any problem with your submission, please write to info@ijok.org.
